The Whole Set!
By A Customer
I started when I was 8, and I'm proud to say, I finished the whole set by age 10. I don't read the new books as they come out anymore, though. No, I didn't buy them here, or even buy them all. I have about 40 of them, and the rest I borrowed from the library or friends. I've always loved the books and I think they are the best books out there for girls my age. They are always interesting, and deal with topics kids relate to. Every girl my age should read them if she has the chance. Over the years, I've come to know and love the characters, and I also love to read the mysteries, superspecials, and everything else. I even have the boardgame, the movies, and the old tv shows from the disney channel on tape. Note: A great companion to this series is The Complete Guide to the Baby-Sitters club, which is kind of like a BSC dictionary. Now that I'm the age of the girls in the books, I never started a babysitting club like I had planned, and I don't even read the books anymore. Yet, I can't help smile when I see them in the store, and they'll always hold a special spot in my heart. So, if you have a daughter who likes to read, this is the perfect present for her!

A Life-Long Fan
By Monique A. Williams
At 23 years-old, it's been about a decade since I stopped reading the BSC, but memories of my friends Kristy, Claudia, Mary Ann, Stacy, Dawn, Jessi, and Mallory (I never liked Shannon) are still very strong. These books were an obsession in my life from 9-11 and was more than a guily pleasure. The innocence in this series without seeming corny make it appropriate and entertaining for tween girls. WIth enterprising role models like the girls in the BSC, real girls with flaws and varying characteristics, this will remain a true staple of my childhood. I only hope my daughter will grow to enjoy them as much as I did. (That would give me a great excuse to re-read them too!) Thank Ann M. Martin for giving me childhood friends who I don't have to worry about asking me what I'm doing with my life.

I love the BSC
By Linette Smith
I love the BSC. The very first one that I read was: Kristy's Big Day. I started when I was 7 years old and continued reading them until I was about 12. Now I am 21 and I have started to collect and read the books that have come out in the past 9 years. I think I like them more now, than when I was younger. I am sad that this wonderful series had to come to an end. Thank you Ann M. Martin for creating friends for girls all over the world!!

The Ultimate Guide to Mastering Your Mental Strength

Everyone knows that regular exercise and weight training lead to physical strength. But how do we strengthen ourselves mentally for the truly tough times? And what should we do when we face these challenges? Or as psychotherapist Amy Morin asks, what should we avoid when we encounter adversity? Through her years counseling others and her own experiences navigating personal loss, Morin realized it is often the habits we cannot break that are holding us back from true success and happiness. Indulging in self-pity, agonizing over things beyond our control, obsessing over past events, resenting the achievements of others, or expecting immediate positive results holds us back. This list of things mentally strong people don't do resonated so much with readers that when it was picked up by Forbes.com it received ten million views.

Now, for the first time, Morin expands upon the thirteen things from her viral post and shares her tried-and-true practices for increasing mental strength. Morin writes with searing honesty, incorporating anecdotes from her work as a college psychology instructor and psychotherapist as well as personal stories about how she bolstered her own mental strength when tragedy threatened to consume her.

Increasing your mental strength can change your entire attitude. It takes practice and hard work, but with Morin's specific tips, exercises, and troubleshooting advice, it is possible to not only fortify your mental muscle but also drastically improve the quality of your life.

Excellent Mental Health-Building Strategies
By Stacey Curnow
I was asked to be an early reviewer for 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do, and to focus on which of the 13 Things I found most helpful or applicable to my own life.

Amy says she’s the only person in the psychology industry who is talking about mental strength on a global level, and I’m delighted that’s she’s bringing the weight of science to this topic (likening mental strength to something you can improve with practice and discipline just like physical health).

She encourages readers to adopt certain mental strength-building strategies by first looking at what mentally strong people don’t do.

Here’s the full list:

1. They Don’t Waste Time Feeling Sorry for Themselves
2. They Don’t Give Away Their Power.
3. They Don’t Shy Away from Change
4. They Don’t Waste Energy on Things They Can’t Control
5. They Don’t Worry About Pleasing Everyone
6. They Don’t Fear Taking Calculated Risks
7. They Don’t Dwell on the Past
8. They Don’t Make the Same Mistakes Over and Over
9. They Don’t Resent Other People’s Success
10. They Don’t Give Up After the First Failure
11. They Don’t Fear Alone Time
12. They Don’t Feel the World Owes Them Anything
13. They Don’t Expect Immediate Results

I thought each of one of the above is important, but given my assignment I’m going to focus on thing they don’t do #6: They Don’t Fear Taking Calculated Risks.

Amy says that all too often people stop themselves from taking a risk because it evokes a strong fear response. The problem is we don’t even investigate the thoughts and beliefs that triggered the fear response in the first place.

We simply decide not to think about it or its consequences at all. And without understanding the beliefs that created the fear, or the potential outcomes of taking a risk even when we do, we end up completely avoiding risky ideas or dreams altogether.

The bottom line is, most of us don’t really invest much time calculating which risks to take and which risks to avoid. Instead, we base our decisions on emotion or habit.

If it feels too scary, we avoid the risk.

But here’s where it gets interesting: Amy tells us if we’re excited about the possible benefits, we’re more likely to work through the challenges that the risk presents. So we really need to be willing to work with our fears in order to transform them.

What I know for sure is that everything we want is outside of our comfort zone.

To quote Amy Morin from 13 Things, “If we only take risks that make us the most comfortable, we’re likely missing out on some great opportunities. Taking calculated risks often mean the difference between living a mediocre life and living an extraordinary life.”

I found Amy’s book helpful in so many ways, and I highly encourage you to read 13 Things: she provides many, many helpful checklists, tools, tips and strategies for becoming mentally strong and living the life of your dreams.

In the chapter about taking calculated risks, she even provides a comprehensive list of questions to ask yourself to help create your own risk/benefit analysis.

If you have ever felt stuck or small in the past and want a new way of evaluating clear next steps for building your mental strength, you’ll love this book!

"People who avoid failure also avoid success." --Robert Kiyosaki.
By Bassocantor
This book grew out of a series of tragic events in the author's life. Three years after her mother died, Amy's husband, still young, suddenly died of a heart attack. Now she not only had lost her mother, she had lost her husband as well. After these tragic events, the author decided to write down what she had personally learned: 13 things mentally strong people don't do. "They were the habits I'd fought so hard against to come out on the other side of my grief."

These thirteen habits don't just help you get through grief, they will help you develop mental strength. Here are some parts of 13 THINGS I thought were especially good:

♦ Developing mental strength requires three different steps: First thoughts, second behavior, third emotions.

♦ We have to balance our emotions with rational thinking: "We make our best decisions in life when we balance our emotions with rational thinking."

♦ One of the first chapters shows the problems with self-pity: "Feeling sorry for yourself is itself destructive. It leads to new problems and can have serious consequences." Instead of wallowing in pity, Amy suggests exchanging self pity for gratitude. The author cites a 2003 study in the "Journal of Personality and Social Psychology," which shows that people who feel gratitude don't get sick as often as others.

♦ A big mistake is a sense of entitlement: "Get over yourself. Develop self awareness of your sense of entitlement.

♦ A big obstacle to mental strength is giving other people power over you: "Giving other people the power to control how you think, feel, and behave makes it impossible to be mentally strong."

♦ This book is filled with lots of practical suggestions. Here's one simple one: "When you receive criticism or feedback from others, wait a beat before responding. If you're upset or emotionally reactive, take the time to calm down."

♦ Learn from prior mistakes: "Establish behavior that will replace previous behavior. Instead of drinking alcohol to cope with stress, a person could identify alternative strategies, such as going for a walk or calling a friend." Looking at prior mistakes in a positive way helps you to learn so that you don't repeat them again.

Finally, in order to maintain mental strength, try coaching yourself. Follow these steps: First monitor your behavior, secondly regulate your emotions, thirdly think about your thoughts.

√ Wow! All in all, 13 THINGS is a practical, well-written book by someone who knows what she is talking about--both professionally as well as personally. I learned a lot of good, practical ideas. At the conclusion of the book the author provides references to support her various conclusions.

The Highest of Praise for a Book on This Subject Matter
By DJD
After appreciating the author's article with the same time that appeared in Forbes magazine, I was looking forward to her book with high expectations. They were met.

As good as that article is, this book takes it to a much deeper level with fuller examples and explanations, but maintains the reader's interests throughout.

I consider this book exceptional.

The analogy that I will use is that it is the opposite of most movies that are based on books. In movies, things are often removed to fit time. In this case, the Forbes article is expounded upon to include explanations and examples of real-life situations that can be applied whether the reader is looking for ways to improve their personal life, their professional life, their financial situation, ways to take care of their health, relationships- I, suppose, just about any part of life.

There is very little jargon, no fluff, and I felt that Ms. Morin truly cares about the reader, rather than caring more for self-promotion of her expertise. She is expert. She is just as human as the reader.

Both the situations and the recommendations are "real." I was left with no thought whatsoever that the recommendations are "good theories that might work in an ideal setting, but not in real life".

I have read or listened to over 100 books that deal with personal improvement of some kind. Most are specific to one or two aspects of life. I would rank "13 Things..." with the very best of them for what I look for in in a book.

Beer in Health and Disease PreventionFrom Academic Press

Presenting both the concerns and problems of beer consumption as well as the emerging evidence of benefit, Handbook of Beer Health and Disease Prevention offers a balanced view of today's findings and the potential of tomorrow's research.

From a beverage of warriors to a cheap and affordable commodity, beer has been a part of our consumption for nearly 8000 years. Like most alcoholic drinks it has been prone to abuse and in some counties the per capita consumption of beer has led to considerable health risks.

However, just as wine in moderation has been proposed to promote health, research is showing that beer -- and the ingredients in beer -- can have similar impact on improving health, and in some instances preventing disease. For example, some cancers like bladder cancers and the incidence of cardiovascular disease are reported to be lower in moderate beer drinkers. Furthermore there is a considerable body of emerging evidence to show that the anti-oxidant capacity of beers is high. It has been argued by some that the total antioxidants ingested in some beer drinkers equates that consumed by red wine drinkers.

The key to this, of course, is understanding and this volume presents a collection of the most current writings on the subject of beer and it's potential in health.

Winner of the 2009 Best Drinks and Health Book in the World - Gourmand World Cookbook Awards

Review

"Beer in Health and Disease Prevention serves an important function by righting the bias toward wine as the only healthy alcoholic beverage. The book is a massive 1,100 page compendium with 103 chapters by many international distinguished contributors. There are too many excellent entries to cite them individually. Suffice it to say that the book is packed with data in readable form. A strong and useful feature is the inclusion at the end of each chapter of a detailed list of summary points. Overall, this volume splendidly fulfils the stated mission. Dr. Preedy deserves congratulations for undertaking and completing a monumental undertaking. From the Back Cover

Presenting the concerns and problems of beer consumption as well as the emerging evidence of benefit, Beer in Health and Disease Prevention offers a balanced view of today's findings and the potential of tomorrow's research.

Color and Meaning: Art, Science, and Symbolism, by John Gage

Is color just a physiological reaction, a sensation resulting from different wave lengths of light on receptors in our eyes? Does color have an effect on our feelings? The phenomenon of color is examined in extraordinary new ways in John Gage's latest book. His pioneering study is informed by the conviction that color is a contingent, historical occurrence whose meaning, like language, lies in the particular contexts in which it is experienced and interpreted.

Gage covers topics as diverse as the optical mixing techniques implicit in mosaic; medieval color-symbolism; the equipment of the manuscript illuminator's workshop, the color languages and color practices of Latin America at the time of the Spanish Conquest; the earliest history of the prism; and the color ideas of Goethe and Runge, Blake and Turner, Seurat and Matisse.

From the perspective of the history of science, Gage considers the bearing of Newton's optical discoveries on painting, the chemist Chevreul's contact with painters and the growing interest of experimental psychologists in the topic of color in the late nineteenth century, particularly in relation to synaesthesia. He includes an invaluable overview of the twentieth-century literature that bears on the historical interpretation of color in art. Gage's explorations further extend the concepts he addressed in his prize-winning book, Color and Culture.

Another fine book, but with important parts missing.
By A Customer
John Gage, the most thorough and clear-thinking historian of color theory, has produced another superb book, rich in references and sound historical bases from which we may go forward ourselves. There are a number of things any reader will delight in finally grasping. With me, it was that interesting distinction between pluralist and unified color modes (page 224) that I finally understand; and there are many other sound explanations that will delight the serious student of color. It is all the more baffling that Gage never reaches a discussion of such things as Land's color theory in relation to Polaroid, and even more important, the workings of color in the computer and its printer. If there ever was a codification millions of colors in relation to primaries it is in the design of these systems used by all of us. Yet Color and Meaning reads as if the computer has not yet been invented. I yearned to get to those chapters, but they were not there. And I regret it.

Phenomenal Review of the Role of OT in Mental Health
By Toni Thompson, MA , OTR/L
Early provides an excellent, extensive review of all aspects of OT in the mental health setting. The book should be used by all OT practitioners, both OTRs and COTAs, in practice. The work defines most conditions encountered, the characteristics and behaviors of such conditions, and specific adaptations to therapeutic media, the environment, and one's attitude and conduct to best address such conditions.
