About the Author
"

Paul Arden (1940‐2008) spent a stormy 18 years in advertising and then found his Alma Mater in Saatchi & Saatchi in 1977, where he worked for 15 years. During his tenure as Executive Creative Director he was responsible for some of Britain’s most successful advertising campaigns – including British Airways, Silk Cut, Intercity and Fuji – and famous slogans, such as "The Car in front is a Toyota" and "The Independent – It is. Are you?". In 1993 Arden set up the film production company Arden Sutherland‐Dodd and began a successful second career as a writer with a weekly column in The Independent and several publications including Whatever You Think, Think The Opposite (2006) and God Explained In A Taxi Ride (2007).

I am an avid book reader, and I love to read books! This book however, is a few years old and a bit difficult to read through sometimes. It was written by a professor who taught a class on Science, Technology, and Society, so they are very knowledgeable. However, they don't exactly bridge the gap between people who have never read on this subject before, and the material they need to learn. I recommend the book simply because it is a requirement for many classes, though if an updated version of this with less abstract and more poignant language was used, I would be much happier with it.

Very theory-heavy

This book takes an interesting topic and makes it pretty boring. Additionally, much of the technology discussed is woefully out of date, as this book was published in 1991. I would not mind a newer edition if it could be made more pertinent to the state of science and technology in current society.

Short and sweet

When I first saw this book, I thought it was too simple to be useful. But, then I read it, and found it quite useful. It's a good book for a motivated medical student (bound for either neurology or pathology), or as a "starter" book for a resident. It's easy reading, and one should be able to finish it comfortably in a month's rotation. There are many tables, and he tends to highlight the board review type topics. Unfortunately, it is a bit too basic in many places (he's aimed at a fairly wide audience according to the preface), there are no review questions, and everything is in black and white (makes Marinesco bodies look quite a lot like Lewy bodies, for example). Nonetheless, it is a very good introduction for the novice neurology resident prepping for the NRITE (but I plan to acquire some larger books such as Scheithauer's Surgical Pathology of the Nervous System and Carpenter's Pathology of Skeletal Muscle to use as references). Certainly a good purchase and the best entry-level review book I have seen for the neurology resident (definitely will NOT be adequate for path residents, tho').

Very good book; minor flaws.

I liked this book. It is quite readable and has useful tables. Plus, it is a bargain compared to other neuropathology books. Unfortunately, the pictures are in B&W which makes the microscopic slides look a little bland and confusing. When you are told about the "red neuron," you want to see one that is actually RED!
Some improvements that would make this book great:
- color pictures
- review questions
- CD-ROM of pictures and/or questions

No color pictures, patchy clinical relevance and weak chapter sub headings make this a very marginal product. Try this instead. Escourolle and Poirier's Manual of Basic Neuropathology

Dr Maurizio Ragazzi has degrees from the Universities of Angelicum and Ferrara in Italy; Columbia, New York and Oxford. He practised for five years with an international law firm during which time he was an international arbitrator. He is now counsel in the Legal Department of the World Bank in Washington, DC.

A Unique Monograph

This monograph is excellent: a thorough, clear and originalscientific work. The two ideas that I found most important are the ethical basis of international obligations erga omnes and the distinction between obligations erga omnes and self-existent obligations (a distinction regularly missed in the international literature). I was also impressed by the command of the whole field of international law displayed by its author and the international outlook of the work (with citations in more than 10 languages). A "must read" for lawyers, diplomats, moral philosophers and, more generally, everybody interested in the rule of law in international relations.

A starting point...

After waiting months to use this book, I was very disappointed. Although Ragazzi has written one of the only authorities on this topic, it is lacking in many aspects. He makes ambitious assertions, including that which states that erga omnes obligations are attached to those rights which are moral absolutes. Unfortunately he does not explore what in fact constitutes a moral absolute. Does it derive from fundamental human rights? What are fundamental human rights and where do they arise from? Neither natural law or positive law theories are discussed, and the reader is expected to accept his position unquestioned. He makes an attempt to list those right which are to be accorded erga omnes status, however by going beyond those which are universally accepted as basic rights, he reduces the authority of his work. To assert that a right to development is likely to be erga omnes, when it is not yet truly accepted in the international legal community, is a stretch. His discussion of the judicial origins and evolution of erga omnes is fair, and provides a good starting point. The footnotes and bibliography are excellant, and provide a rich source of work to draw upon if pursuing this area of law, however overall, the book is unimpressive.
