The fatal shooting of 17-year-old Edmund Perry by New York City police officer Lee Van Houten in June of 1985 drew national headlines. The officer asserted that he was mugged by Perry and another black youth near Harlem. Subsequently, Edmund's brother Jonah, a Cornell undergraduate, was accused of being the second participant, tried and found not guilty. The case created controversy among blacks and whites alike, for the Perry brothers, raised in the ghetto, were educated at private schools; Edmund, graduated from Philips Exeter, was to attend Stanford University that fall. Anson (Exile, etc.) probes the problems that attended the uprooting of the brothers from a deprived background to the upper-class environment of their schools; and he raises questions as to whether the worlds of black and white in the U.S. are capable of reconciliation. In a profound and disturbing study Anson reaches a troubling conclusion about this case: "The only villain I had found was something amorphous, not a person or a thing, just a difference called race. It was racenot the fact of it, but the consequences flowing from it . . . " that relegated the slain Edmund, for one, to the ethics of the street. Photos not seen by PW. Author tour.

Journalist Anson has written a compelling account of the life and death of a Harlem teenager. This black adolescent was different, however. He was a graduate of Phillips Exeter Prep School and had been admitted to Stanford University. When he was killed by a white policeman during an alleged mugging attempt in 1985, public reaction, especially among blacks, blamed the police for yet another needless murder of a young black man, in this case a kind of "black hope." Anson uncovered a much more complex story. Perry was trapped between two worldsthe upper-class, high-expectation milieu of Exeter and the "streets" of Harlem. He sold drugs at Exeter and tried to fit into Harlem, in part with street crime. Anson tells this tragic story with great empathy. Highly recommended for most libraries. Anthony O. A very interseting read Into the mind of a teenager living between two worlds
By My Handle
The author did an excellent job of researching the circumstances behind the killing of this young man I was able to develop a deep understanding of the challenges an inner city youth must endure even when he has had access to a "better" chance at life. I believe that the author tried in earnest to report the facts as he discovered the, and did show bias toward anyone.

Book for young and old

A beautiful book that can be shared together with children and adults. With a sweet story of longtime companionship between elderly woman Rose and her stubborn yet loving dog John Brown and the sudden interuption of a black cat in their humdrum lives. For children, the story of a close-knit friendship between a lady and her dog that opens up to allow a new addition to share their house and lives. For adults, an underlying symbolic reference of the black cat representing death, Rose's acceptance of it and John Brown's refusal to allow it into their home/life. All in all, a good story.

A Quiet and Wonderful Story

John Brown is a large shaggy dog living contentedly with Rose. When a cat arrives needing food and love, Rose is ready to open her heart and home to the new arrival, but John Brown has a very hard time sharing Rose, and watching Rose take care for someone else. By the book's end, John Brown has changed. In simple words and marvelous pictures, this book helps children - and the adults reading to them - consider a difficult and complicated emotion: jealousy. The perfect book to help children get ready for a baby brother or sister, it's too bad it isn't easier to find.

BEAUTIFUL WORDS AND ART ADDRESS TWO OF LIFE EVENTS. A sweet, loving yet profound work here.

First published in 1977, John Brown, Rose and the Midnight Cat by Jenny Wagner and illustrated by Ron Brooks has become truly one of the classics in children's literature. What at first appears to be a simple message is actually quite complex. There are two major "life issues" involved in the story, each just as important as the other; each is addressed in a charmingly whimsical way. One issue a child will recognize quite quickly; the other an adult will be aware of early on. There is food for thought in each of these issues.

Rose is an old woman, and elderly widow living in a very charming old fashion house. John Brown is her best friend, an old shaggy English Sheepdog. They have a wonderful life together, puttering around the garden, talking together, and setting by the fire at night. They are comfortable in each others company. It is a good life; a sweet life and quite satisfying.

Then enters the Midnight Cat! Oh my. The emotion of jealousy enters the picture and John Brown has great trepidations about having this cat enter their cozy lives. Rose, the elderly lady wants to feed and care for the cat; wants to include him in their family. John Brown wants none of this...he has his friend, his mistress and he does not want anything to come between them.

"But that night, when Rose was safe in bed,
John Brown went outside.
He drew a line around the house
and told the midnight cat to stay away.
"We don't need you, cat," he said.
"We are all right, Rose and I."

Ms. Wagner uses simplicity and an almost poetic style to tell the story. This gentle wording has obviously been carefully selected by the author and the pitch is perfect for the story being told. The wonderfully, and I might add, beautifully nuanced sentences are quite short and quite to the point. It is a delight to read.

This is an ideal work to read to a child when changes are afoot...a new baby in the house, acceptance of a new member of the family. Jealousy is a rather ugly emotion but is present in all of us and children need all the help they can get in dealing with it at times.

But wait...That is not all!

The adult reader will quickly become aware that there are other things in play here. When the Midnight Cat appears, you will note that he is presented in a rather sleek and threatening way which is completely out of character as to the rest of the art work. There is something a bit foreboding about this intruder from the outside, something a bit threatening, mysterious...an unknown! Rose accepts him, is comfortable with him, John Brown is not!

Of course it will be pretty plain that the black Midnight cat is obviously representing death and yes, death will indeed intrude upon the life of the two elderly companions. You can fight it, you can try to reject it, you can try to ignore it, but it is simply not going to go away. This is the situation that John Brown must learn to deal with; this is reality and he must find acceptance.

The adult reader is allowed to address the problem of jealously with the child but need not take it a step further and investigate and confront death until they feel the child is ready. I must say though that I have found children to be much more aware of some to these subtle situations than we give them credit for, so don't be surprised if your child comes up with this concept on their own...be prepared to discuss this with her or him.

Some folks do not like this work and feel it is overly sentimental. I personally did not find it as such. Some do not like the illustrator's work (very few), but again, I personally was quite enchanted with the artist's work. The artist, Ron Brooks has given it a soft, old-time look (Except the cat), and I find this very pleasing to my eye. Some readers feel that when Rose goes to bed and tells John Brown that she is ill, that she should have been more honest with her old companion. My feelings here are that this is a children's book and feel the parent should have the option of discussing this aspect of the book on their own terms and in their own time. The author has skillfully left this option open.

This offering from our cousins in Australia is one that needs to be added to your child's library (and I feel adults will have much to contemplate over this one also).

Refreshing look in the mirror

I'm pretty sure I wrote a review as soon as I finished the book... But here goes: a very good read. I experienced so many emotions when I read this book because I could relate on so many levels. It forces the reader to really evaluate what they are or are not contributing to their relationship... And how to decide whether or not you can really make things work. Much needed & I'm sure I'll be re-reading again in the future....

I applaud anyone that writes a book and uses their everyday life as the example. She is giving advice from a standpoint of not what she thinks, but what she knows. You don't have to be married to purchase this book. You could see your single- self in these pages. Use it as a reference for some of your own situations. Thankful to the Author for these strategies. I will definitely use them in my NEXT marriage :)

Not as good as it once was...

I've been buying this book annually for several years. Unfortunately I don't feel it has the intuitive insight it's had in the past. I used to use his annual astrology book as a tool weekly, it was always within my reach. On the coffee table, night stand in the bedroom, and in my work bag. Whenever anyone came over they couldn't put it down. Now I read it just once every 3-4 weeks.

Absolute nonsense!

This 'book' and its contents are nothing more than pure fantasy concocted by a Paranormal group that have not done anything and never will do anything to further investigation into the moors murders case.
I have had the great misfortune to have been contacted by this group before this nonsense was published and I was asked to take them seriously. Having spent 50 years living with this case and going over the known facts countless times I can state that this pathetic attempt to gain an insight into more facts and to get into the head of Brady is one of the worst examples of self-publicity and total rubbish I have ever come across.
I have even had cause to contact the Greater Manchester Police about the anguish these people cause to myself and my family (I am the brother of Keith Bennett, the only victim of Brady and Hindley not to have found.) The latest quote I have from the police is 'We all share the same views of the Worsley Paranormal Society and again they have been politely but clearly told where they stand and informed of our views on the lack of legitimacy of their visions/musings/opinions.'

This group of misled and misinformed individuals still trawl the internet claiming, firstly, that they have the support of the police and then they state that they cannot understand why they are not taken seriously! Nobody with any sort of understanding of this case and the details of this case will ever take them seriously, the sooner they take that FACT in the better for all concerned.

A book which obviously is bothering people ? especially ones who have never even read it yet make a comment. The Secret Key to The Moors Murders is a book that is showing why Ian Brady was influenced by things he read and watched like films. He was living in a time warp and acted out much in a fantasy world he created. By using History and historical people he admired, like Oliver Cromwell, writers and poets and especially the Industrial Revolution,he was able to map the areas to this and create a puzzle field where he buried clues to what this was all about. The writers and Geniuses like James Joyce, W B Yeats, T S Eliot and the surrealism Artists of Paris.. I explain why I am able to see these .. then I have gone deeper into the Occult and Crowley and the areas he visited to see why these were important to him and possible sites for other victims. Its complex and no wonder he has been able to hide behind all of this and keep his game going. Even the names of people he writes to mean more to him, like Cowley and even the name Bennett..
