mom with spunky baby meets boy with attitude ...

Kara is a single mother to Nadia – a sweet and feisty 18 month old toddler who keeps her mom on her toes. After a series of largely unfortunate events brings handsome PD (you’ll learn what it means when you read the book) paramedic Reid into Kara’s life, Kara doubts her ability to be a good mother, knows Reid strongly disapproves of her, and in general wonders about the course of her life. Kara is frantically busy at work, but earns a good living, allowing her and Nadia to live comfortably. She is also ever mindful of Nadia’s father, Steve, who dumped Kara after learning she was pregnant and probably still doesn’t even know he has a daughter.

Reid has some unfortunate and painful history of his own, causing him to put up a wall between himself and anyone with any ability to get close – and that goes doubly so for anyone with a sweet little girl.

Throughout the book, the reader feels the ups and downs of Kara and Reid’s lives as individuals and when together, especially when Nadia's father re-enters the picture. Even though I did not agree with some of the child raising attitudes expressed by characters in the book, overall I did not feel that it significantly detracted from the basic story, which I loved. I had not read the prior book in the series by the same author that was about Kara’s sister, but I do intend to. This is a stand-alone book that I easily understood and related to, although I would guess it would feel richer and be even more engaging had I been familiar with the characters and their earlier stories. In summary, I do recommend this book as an engaging, entertaining, and reasonably quick and easy read, although there are a few inconsistencies in the storyline and wording. As I have an ARC, it is not clear to me whether these will be corrected before the final version is released. Even with the few problems, I would still recommend as it is a story that I would not have wanted to miss.

I loved this story

I had so much fun with this book. I smiled, I laughed and just really enjoyed reading "His Touch" the first in the Summer in New York Series. Patty Blout just made this such an easy and lovely read that I am looking forward to His Kiss and His Love and really hope that the authors that wrote them make me fall in love with their characters too.

I love reading quick, summer reads especially when the the leading man happens to be a hot paramedic with FDNY. **swoon** Mix that with his scruffy attitude and precious little girl and you have me hooked. And, believe me, Reid was one hot male. He may have had some hardships and wore them on his sleeve but, he turned out to be just was the doctor ordered for Kara.

Kara was a strong-willed, loving women. Even though she had a hard past, she stood up on her own two feet and made a life for her and her daughter. She may have had some "woe-is-me" times but they were well deserved. Enter Reid and her life becomes totally complicated. Then bring in the ex with some horrifying news and Reid becomes her rock.

Together, they save each other. Kara makes Reid take a good look at his life and face the past and his grief. Reid lets Kara know that she doesn't have to go through life alone.

I loved this story. Patty Blount made you feel for both of the main characters in the book and she surrounded them with loving, fun friends that would do anything for the other, especially in times of need. She moved the story along and didn't drag out anything that would have had you wondering when she was going to get to the point. Reid was handsome, strong and vulnerable. Kara was loving, caring and fragile. Put them together and you had an HEA that was touching and beautiful.

An enjoyable romantic read...

If you are looking for a short but sweet, well-written, heart touching romantic tale, you might want to consider His Touch (Book 1 of Summer in New York series) by Patty Blount. Handsome NYFD paramedic, Reid Bennett, is used to rushing in and saving lives. However, it is his heart that ultimately gets rescued by single mom, Kara Larsen, and her toddler, Nadia. Reid has never gotten over the tragic death of his little girl, Erin, when he keeps running into Kara. Nadia reminds him so much of his loss, in his anguish, he is always seems to be lashing out at Kara. With a backdrop of memories of loved ones lost on 9/11, a great cast of believable secondary characters, this emotion packed story unfolds with angst-filled twists and turns. If my research is correct, “The Christmas in New York” series is based on the love stories of Nadia’s friends and sister. This reviewer would definitely like to read all the books in both series. Please note each book appears to have a different author.

Pretty good

This is no 'Gone with the Wind', but it's not bad. The author stayed pretty true to Scarlett's character. I enjoyed reading it. Rhett Butler's character was a little different, but it was still good. There was a great deal of time spent in Ireland during the book. Some parts lagged a little, but soon my attention was recaptured. I did like the end. I never saw the mini series on TV.

Great book. If you loved Gone with the Wind then this book allows you to finally get the ending of Scarlett and Rhett. It was written very well and a wonderful finish to one of my favorite movies.

Another outstanding novel out of Africa

You can read a dozen nonfiction books about Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe’s kleptocracy and fail to get a more vivid sense of what life is really like there than from this recent novel by Tendai Huchu. In one short work of fiction, Huchu conjures up the sad reality of day-to-day existence in that beleaguered country: the 90 percent unemployment, the ubiquitous corruption, the hyperinflation, the ever-present shortages, the barely functional electricity service, the vicious eviction of white Africans from their farms and businesses, the rabid homophobia. The people of resource-rich Zimbabwe are among the world’s most poverty-stricken, and average life expectancy in their country is thirty-seven, but what does that really mean for the way they live their lives, day after day? The Hairdresser of Harare opens up a window on that steadily unfolding tragedy.

Here is Huchu summing up this reality: “I felt an atmosphere of friendliness, violence, innovation, poverty, joy, but the only thing that hung over everything else was despair; an air of hopelessness as if everyone was in a pit that they could not climb out of.”

Set in the capital city, Harare, and revolving around the hairdressers who eke out a living from a beauty salon, The Hairdresser is the first-person account of a talented beautician named Sisi Vimbai. As a teenager, Vimbai was impregnated by her Sugar Daddy, a wealthy businessman who quickly grew distant soon after she gave birth to a daughter. Now nearly twenty-six, with a ten-year-old to support, Vimbai is on the verge of desperation when a new threat arises: a handsome young man of twenty-two named Dumi has displaced her as the salon’s most sought-after hairdresser. The novel spins out the tale of Vimbai and Dumi’s growing relationship.

Since writing The Hairdresser of Harare, which appeared in 2010, Huchu has published a second novel, The Maestro, the Magistrate, and the Mathematician. A native of Zimbabwe, he now lives in Scotland and is employed as a podiatrist.

In The 'Hairdresser of Harare', there were many twists and turns throughout the book. I would say that this book would be best for people from the ages 16 and above. The book uses some foul and mature language, as you get deeper into the story. The story talks about the life of a boy who was abandoned by his family because of a sexist "issue". The book also refers to situations that actually happen in real life such as families and friends competing for money and business. This book also talks about politics in the society today such as gays not being accepted, black businesses trying to make a living, and unemployment. The tone of this book is threatening yet optimistic, so the ease of the reading of this book is pretty understanding and is easy to process. I think that this book was very interesting and age appropriate considering the fact that many issues that go on in the world today, was spoken about throughout the book. 'The Hairdresser of Harare' had discussed issues that are relevant today. I could relate to many of the problems that was going on throughout the book and understand how hard some of the issues were to overcome.

A wonderful description of Zimbabwe as it is today -- it's peoples, manners, and its pervasive corruption as told through the lives of a hairdresser and his fellow workers, family and neighbors. Although the author currently lives abroad, I certainly can understand why he left his homeland. Having known an elderly lady who was forced to leave Zimbabwe, her home for 60 years after Rhodesia became independent, this book, although fiction, seemed as if she had written it.

For those interested in what it's like to live in Zimbabwe, I highly recommend Peter Godwin's books: Mukiwa, When a Crocodile Eats the Sun and The Fear. Also, Christina Lamb's House of Stone is another fine book. .

Truly Amazing Miracles Removing Doubt of How Jesus Meant for Us to Eat His Flesh and Drink His Blood

I actually viewed the Vatican International Exhibition of the Eucharistic Miracles of the World when the Exhibit came to North Carolina. The book enables me to study in depth these absolutely amazing miracles that defy the laws of physics and nature. I enthusiastically recommend the book for anyone interested in how God works His miracles for us to witness and to show us He is truly with us and present as He promised He would be.

A comprehensive list of Eucharistic Miracles

This book contains over 100 brief accounts of Eucharistic Miracles around the world. It has forwards by Cardinal Raymond Burke, Msgr. Martinelli and Fr. John Hardon, which give catechetical explanations into the Church's teaching on these miracles and private revelations. From there the book is divided into sections based on country.

This book is not an apologetical work; for those looking for documentation and sources should probably refer to Joan Carroll Cruz's book on Eucharistic Miracles, which deals with specific cases more in depth. The book here gives only a page or two to each miracle, containing brief descriptions and very helpful pictures. These stories were presented as an Exhibition, each having its own posterboard, which have been condensed to book format. In the process of condensing the book, some of the photos are a bit too small to see, and others are quite fuzzy, which points to a bit of poor editing. Other than that, this book is an excellent resource to see how many wonderful ways Our Lord has given Himself to us in the Eucharist!

Understanding and classifying the Livingness of Matter

This truly extraordinary book (abbreviated TCF) contains information at several levels. If you read and understand this book you will know and understand the Secret of Life. Matter is energy, as we know from E=mc(squared) but this book talks of all energy and matter as Life! This Life evolves at the atomic level, human level, planetary level, etc.
TCF has succeeded in describing and classifying many types of life inherent to matter/energy. It talks of the sumtotal of Life on the Physical Plane, the Astral Plane, the Mental Plane. Everything ever written about auras in Theosophical or New Age texts can be understood at depth in TCF. It talks about the chakras; not just the human ones, but those of animal/vegetable/mineral, and of the larger Lives such as for a Planetary Being (Logos).
The reader will soon see that TCF is an ambitious book; its words painting the inner bodies of humanity and a description of the Egoic Lotus or the vehicle of the human soul which "sends down" incarnations.
The remarkable thing about TCF is its coherence as a workable theory. Properly understood, it generalizes just about every New Age and Religious belief system, without being sectarian in any way. It accepts the sanctity of the Buddha, the Christ and other World Teachers. If you understand the "14 Rules of White Magic" from TCF you will have no need for Wicca as all of what it represents is subsumed in the knowledge of various devas and elementals. The "14 Rules" were themselves expanded into AAB's book "A Treatise on White Magic", which is written at a more superficial level than TCF.
My first reflective/meditative reading of TCF took me six months of daily 1 to 3 hour sessions in 1986. Even today, I count this time spent in real terms as an asset more valuable than my joy for knowledge which led me to obtain a PhD in mathematics.
My physical lifespan is of course limited. However, the insight I've gained from this book will serve me long after this incarnation is at an end.

Excellent

Deep, profound, complicated and eventually simple, like all truths....I have had this book for several years, I have read parts of many times and I am just about to delve into it yet again. A book to read and digest slowly. The information is so profound it takes time to assimilate and a certain level of previous understanding of metaphysical concepts to grasp at all. Not for the beginner on the path, just as a doctorate level physics text is not enjoyable for someone in secondary school. It takes some patience and dedication but is very much worth the effort. Profound.

Lucidity for the Soul

In my opinion this book was written for the training of the Soul and not the personality. It has been my opinion that this is a book written in a harmonic that resonates in understanding at a level above the concrete mind and should be read through even if not completely understood at the moment of reading.
I have had others verbally express the same opinion as above to me without my input. In my opinion this is a book that will keep coming back at you for a very long time.
Of the hundreds of books of similar orientation that I have read, I consider this one book to be the most Lucid! Of the approximately 1300 pages, the first 6 to 7 hundred addressing the creation of reality through mind, may change the way you participate with life!
As Buckeroo Banzai said, " No matter where you go, there you are!"
Also worth reading (though not at the level of the above, but still superb!) I. K. Taimni (Science of Occultism, and his other books) Torkom Saraydarian (Especially his Science of Meditation, and Science)
