About the Author
Born in East Ham, London, top guitar star Bert Weedon wanted to play the guitar from his very early childhood. When he was just twelve years old he persuaded his father to buy him a rather battered guitar off a stall in London's famous Petticoat Lane Street Market, for exactly 75p. And so began the career of one of Britain's most accomplished instrumental stars. Bert went on to play guitar with artists such as Tommy Stelle, Marty Wilde, Laurie London, Cliff Richard, Adam Faith and Billy Fure to name but a few. Artists who learned to play guitar from Play in a Day include Eric Clapton, Brian May, Hank Marvin and Paul McCartney.

Recommended as a primer for your guitar studies.

Bert Weedon's "Play In A Day" is I believe the best selling guitar instruction book of all time in England, and possibly around the world too, although it it not easy to find here in the U.S. (I got my copy via Amazon). Some of the famous British guitarists who got their start from this book include Eric Clapton, John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Sting, and a few others. Not bad company to be in. Bert Weedon is himself a legendary British guitarist. You can see some film clips of him playing on You Tube. Anyway, I am guitar player with a few years experience. I picked up a copy of this book just because I had heard about it for years, and even I learned a few things. Be open minded though; this book is intended to give you a foundation for playing guitar, just as is Mel Bay's Complete Method For Modern Guitar (which I recommended as a follow up to this book). It will not teach how to play Van Halen or Steve Vai tunes. Remember everybody: baby steps. Then after you've mastered this, you can move on to the more modern styles if you wish. Oh, and everybody please buy a metronome, even if it's a cheap one.

Covers all the basics in easy to understand language.

From beginning to end, this book applies to players of all ages and is easy to understand. He breaks it down into manageable chunks of information. He addresses the reader/player as if 2 friends are sitting down to talk. I recommend this to anyone who needs to cover the basics to start using their guitar. He even covers reading music for those who do not already know how. Highly recommended by someone who knows music, but bought this for their kids (16 and 18) to use, since explaining/teaching is not my strong suite. I learned things from it, too! Mostly, have fun.

When Mr. Weedin passed, I heard Eric Clapton & several other great guitarist interviewed about this man and the book. They all said they started as young teens with this book so I bought it for my husband. He has loved his new guitar because this book has made learning so much easier & simple.

STILL an awesome book!!!

I see some posts by self-proclaimed "amateur experts" about Mr. Law's books being "dated" and having "many errors". But I NEVER see any of these "errors" pointed out. One person said that he sent a whole list of errors to Mr.Law, but none of them were included in newer editions of his books. Hmmmm...maybe that's because the alleged "errors" were BS and weren't errors at all. As to the book being "dated", I have both of the newer, much-hyped versions of the 98K books that are supposedly the newest and best coverage of the 98K, and they don't impress at all, except they are saying in 3 volumes what Mr. Law said much more concisely in two, for a lot less cost. All they really are, are rip-offs of Mr. Law's work, including how he shows the different changes made to the 98K.
As to the "Sniper Variations" book....it is just amazing how well it has stood the test of time. The info is still accurate and NO book since it's original printing has come close to covering the subject of 98K sniper rifles as well as this one does. It is a valued addition to my 98K library, right next to Volume 1.

NOT as good as the first volume on the K98.

Actually, I was quite disappointed in this book about the sniper variants of the K98 as I was so overly impressed with Volume I of Backbone of the Wehrmacht. Whereas the first book is the end-all book ever printed on the K98 Mauser, this book does not follow up with the same type of painstakingly researched data, information, production dates, codes, and things such as that.

The photos are not as plentiful, the information is at times not very specific, and there is heavy reliance here on simply reprinting original German WWII-era documents regarding sniper training and sniper rifle data. There is suprisingly little study done here on scopes, on scope markings, on prewar civilian scopes, and on actually studying surviving original sniper rifles.

If you're wanting to know everything there is to know about K98 sniper rifles, this book will not answer all your questions. Unfortunately, there's not much else out there. Truthfully though, on this subject, I think The German Sniper 1914-1945 does a better job of examining the K98 sniper rifle, and that really surprised me.

Stop staring at these helpless and spoiling reviews! Just grab one and start reading.

Bought on Day 1 and finished on Day 3. It was a fantastic Sci-fi reading experience from beginning right to the end. You just couldn't stop feeling surprised and stunned by those choices and decisions made by the characters all the time, regardless they matter or not. The unthinkable scope of the plot and sceneries just repeatedly stroke your imagination and nerves like forever. Twists and turns in both large and small scale are blended into the whole logical story-line, which is so well-arranged that it turns out to be better than a mind-bending blockbuster movie.

Comparing with the first volume, the new translator localized the writing in a more "English" way, making the reading for English speakers feel like reading an original Western literature instead of an Eastern-Western translation, which may not be too good for "preserving" the original writing, but... there isn't too many Chinese culture/history related content in this second book anyway.

One more thing to add, unlike vivid human beings appear in regular full-length fictions, most characters Liu sculpted in his works look like symbols instead, which I fancy is on purpose, being probably the only "obstacle" for this book in the way of becoming a true saluter to those real Classics back in the Golden Age of Science Fiction.

Definitely a powerful Hugo/Nebular contender and a likely winner next year.

The second book of this series, “The Dark Forest”, has its obvious shortcomings. The most glaring flaw I personally feel is Luo Ji (the leading character of the second book)’s romance with his “dream girl”. But how many engaging love stories have been told by scifi authors anyway? In addition, for American readers who have enjoyed the Chinese cultural/historical aspects of book one, reading The Dark Forest requires no understanding of the Chinese culture. Some of my friends also think that the Wallfacer project does not make much sense, but I disagree.

This book deserves a five-star rating thoroughly. Unlike the Three-Body Problem that bears the burden of slowly laying the contextual foundation for the plot of the entire book series, the pace of The Dark Forest moves rather quickly from the beginning. There is no three-body computer game anymore. But a different game is played between four Wallfacers and their respective Wallbreakers. Each Wallfacer tried and failed in searching for a way to counter the looming invasion. Yet it does not seem to matter because, before the first alien fleet arrives, human technology has accelerated and risen to a level that rivals the alien race. Yes, inter-planetary peace is afoot.

Part III of The Dark Forest is the climax and most dramatic stage of the entire trilogy series. Both Luo Ji and Zhang Beihai – two leading characters of the book – are awaken from century-long hibernation to witness the human race’s first physical contact with the aliens. I am not going to the details because it will spoil the fun of your reading. Suffice it to say there are several brilliant twists of the plot that forces the question: what is humanity after all? In my mind, the best scifi novels are not so much about the light-speed space dashing or spectacular galactic wars, but how we define humanity when facing an alien encounter or invasion. The Dark Forest just did that, in a chilling way. Almost like a social scifi, the socio-psychological elements give the book a provocative depth and resonance

Zhang Beihai comes out almost as a Vulcan from StarTrek. Not only did he go undercover for many centuries, but also he came up with a shockingly unhuman solution to save the human race in the most dire moment. Morality is of no concern. Just another rational but dark choice in the face of desperation, which is quite consistent with the pervading sense of pessimism about humans through the first two books.

This book presents an interesting theory about how different civilizations view each other in the vast universe, hence the reason for the book title “The Dark Forest”. It’s similar to the famous prisoner’s dilemma where betrayal or hostility seems to generate the biggest rewards. The overall concept reminds me of the Inhibitors in “Revelation Space” by Alastair Reynolds. Again, the theory does not produce any good prospect for cosmic harmony. If u think the Three-Body Problem is a bit depressing, the Dark Forest gets bleaker. And of course, Liu is not done yet because the final installment of the trilogy is called “The Dead End”.

The Three-Body Problem was the finalist for both Hugo and Nebula awards this year. I will not surprised if the Dark Forest actually win it. That’s how GOOD it is.

Arguably better than volume one

I loved the moody mystery of Three Body. While this book retains the unfortunate emotional flatness of the original, it also retains the boundless creativity and ability to deliver delightful and horrifying surprises to the reader. While it isn't without flaws, it is nonetheless a classic. My only advice is to read it now and guard yourself against spoilers.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Bootle, a classic tabby cat, wakes up one morning to an empty house and finds that his purr is gone. He spends the rest of the day looking for the elusive noise in a number of interesting, but ultimately unproductive places, such as the toilet, the cupboard, the clock, and the washing machine. His purr at last surfaces with the reappearance of his family. A cat needs his ``. . . openers of cans . . . pourers of cream . . . strokers of fur . . .'' to be really content. Coxon's watercolor illustrations are lavish and detailed, making skillful use of white highlights and small brush strokes. Bootle certainly looks strokable, but the paintings are strongly reminiscent of calendar or greeting-card art, and the artist is much less at home with human faces (the boy looks a bit squashed) than she is with animals and plants (or even the interior of a refrigerator). The text occasionally relies on some too cute wordplay. Boodle's in a Jam!

This delight,warm tale shall please adults and children alike. The lush, intricate illustrations feature the cat seeking his purr in different rooms. One hilarious panel depicts Boodle staring fixedly inside a toilet hoping the purr will pop back up, LOL.
The story itself unfolds neatly, is well paced for all its briefness, and includes a few cozy panels of young owner feeding his pet, holding an adoring Boodles in a headlock while doing homework.
Highly recommend this as gift to anyone who is amused by felines' antics, or for children.

Cute little book

My wife set this tiny little book in front of me a while ago. It's an illustrated children's book about a cat who goes in search of his lost purr, making a total wreck of his house as he does so. Of course, his owner comes up, whereupon he immediately finds his purr. We gloss a bit over what the owner thought of the state of the house. Nice illustrations, particularly when the cat's looking goofy.

It's hard to know whether to laugh or cry at this forthright, kindly and odd saga of advice from one of the most public divorcees in recent memory. Ivana obviously wants to help women struggling with some semblance of her own troubles. Get tough, get on with your life, keep busy, look good, find a new man: not much to argue with there. But however hard she tries to identify with ordinary folk, she can't resist telling how Prince Charles dropped by for tea at Mar-a-Lago. Seemingly nothing escapes Ivana's sharp eye. Her readers are bombarded with rhetorical questions: "You're not surprised are you?" (that Diana couldn't change Charles); "That's quite a blessing, don't you think?" (the two young princes). Cinderella wins no points from Ivana: "Cinderella should have said good-bye to those nasty relatives, cleaned herself up, gotten a nice job and a cute apartment somewhere." It is easy to mock, but the heart of the champion skier from the former Czechoslovakia is in the right place. She adores her three children and manages to keep all animosity toward The Donald out of these pages, saying, "I wish Donald nothing but the best, and I know he feels the same way toward me." This curiosity rather than self-help volume will be read more for the interesting detail of daily life as Ivana Trump than for hints on how to survive divorce and single parenthood.

No prior statistical knowledge is assumed, and the mathematical level required is approximately equivalent to school mathematics.
