A changing of the guard amongst key influencers

In the not-so-distant past, if someone wants to have an impact on the culture at large; launch a new product or win an election their best (and virtually only) bet was engaging traditional print and broadcast media outlets. And whether you were trying to secure an advertising buy or editorial space you also had to deal with "gatekeepers" - those are the editors, producers and sales managers within the media. However, with the continuing rise of the Internet and its democratization of the communication chain - that old-media model is shrinking and eroding daily. Technology and business expert Ben McConnell looks at the juggernaut-like influence and power that has shifted from the old "gatekeepers" to a new class. This new breed of influence peddlers is what McConnell calls Citizen Marketers and it's the title of his book. He defines these individuals as a small group of young, computer savvy hipsters that align their Internet gravitas with any idea, product or brand that happens to fit their particular worldview that day. McConnell stresses that these individuals are influencers in the truest sense since that can quickly mobilize and lead others to action. Hitting the Nail on the Head

In typical fashion, Jackie and Ben have written a clear and thoughtful book that's easy to understand and easy to get through. Well worth taking the time to read.

To get their points across, they use a number of well-known examples of "citizens" communicating through online channels, but don't just scratch the surface - they've clearly put on their reporting hats, replacing just web anecdotes for real interviews.

The book falls into the trap of having to "put a name" to the scenarios they see. Concepts like "firecrackers" may help the novice understand a certain type of consumer, but experts won't see the value in another pile of terminology thrown into the marketing void.

Jackie and Ben are purists - and limit themselves to only seeing organic behavior as having value, rather than helping companies understand how they can accelerate and augment what's happening the market. Either way, they are at their finest here and have produced a manifesto that's worth buying for all of your clients.

They communicate with American Sign Language and prefer to socialize with other Deaf rather than interact with people who hear. For them, deafness is not a disability; thus, they don’t want to hear any more than hearing people want to be deaf. They consider marriages between deaf and hearing people to be “mixed marriages” that are destined to fail. So strong are the beliefs of members of the Deaf Culture that many would choose to abort a pregnancy rather than have a hearing child.

About the Author
Alan Balter was born in Chicago and attended the Chicago Public Schools. He entered the University of Illinois in Urbana in 1956 where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in 1960 and a Master’s degree in Special Education in 1962. Subsequently, he taught adolescents with developmental delays at the Niles West High School in Skokie, Illinois. He returned to the University of Illinois and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Special Education in 1967. After working as the Director of the Niles Township High Schools Department of Special Education, he took a position with Chicago State University in 1969 where he prepared teachers for children and adolescents with developmental delays, learning disabilities, and emotional disorders. After 32 years at the university, he retired in 2000. He and his wife Barbara, also a retired teacher, enjoy extensive travel and fourteen grandchildren.

fascinating blend of fact, fiction, and food for thought

If you were deaf and your child were born deaf, would you want your child to hear? Alan Balter’s fact-filled novel, Different Ways of Being, offers intriguing answers to this and other questions as it brings the world of the deaf to vivid life, leaving readers to ponder perhaps that silent world isn’t a handicap—rather just “different.” But what if your child were unable to use his legs? What if your child couldn’t think or concentrate? Would you “repair” the child then?

Alan Balter’s novel hovers very cleverly on that line between fact and fiction, presenting vast amounts of details and statistics in a manner that reads as smoothly as the story woven into the pages. A family of Deaf—mother, father and son never had hearing; a family of orphans—mother and father never had parents, and the wounded child doesn’t know how to relate to parents, teachers, or the world; a family that deals with paraplegia, and details the issues involved in wanting to marry and have a child… The lives of families intersect, sometimes sweetly, sometimes in terror. Depression rears its ugly head, and every step of the way to life, acceptance and forgiveness is explored. It’s a wonderfully hopeful tale, a surprisingly absorbing tale (given its wealth of facts), and a novel that leads the reader to see the world through different eyes.

We even learn why the Deaf can dance, and this novel, while piling misfortune on coincidence, dances to a very pleasing beat.

Deaf awareness on steroids!

Presented in the form of a novel, this book brings about much needed awareness of the Deaf community, showing those in the "normal" hearing world that their idea of normal is a far cry from that of Deaf folks, who put their children's health and safety before their own egos. If a Deaf child is born to a hearing parent, they immediately want surgery to make the child like them. Yet if a Deaf parent were to even think of making the same decision, should their child be hearing, it would be "barbaric." This is one of the most well written books I have ever had the pleasure to read.

It was okay to be gay back in the day as long as you practiced it in a certain way

This is a really excellent example of well-executed non-fiction. It's sensible and sensitive, humorous, reasonably paced, and justifiably exhaustive and/or brief as necessary. It's definitely an interesting read, and a good reminder that sometimes we get a little too wrapped up in what our culture believes right now, and forget that other cultures have believed other things pretty much forever. Gary Leupp covers all the different ways that homosexual behavior manifested itself in this particular era of Japan, and this has definitely piqued my interest in how other nations during other eras have treated their own confirmed bachelors.

This explains a whole lot!

This book is really fascinating, if a bit pricey (Kindle).
However, it is a scholarly work and well-worth the price of research.
Especially since I've read and reread this book several times.
At each reading I find an answer to something I've always wondered about.
For example, why did Japanese nobility tend to be so warlike?
If a Lordling gives honors and offices to an undeserving Boy Toy.....
Well, you can imagine.

Thorough Research--Excellent Result

Gary Leupp's research was clearly thorough, and his end-result benefitted greatly from it. Although I already knew of both the monastic and samurai traditions of same-sex pairings, to see the extent to which this permeated Tokugawa society was fascinating. It also gave strong argument to the constructivist theory of homosexuality, which, when considered alongside biological factors, makes for a coherent picture of sexuality in society. It's clear from the work that more research can and should be done: same-sex pairings among women, and the shift from the Tokugawa to the Modern era in Japan and the resulting changes in sexuality would make for excellent books as well. One curious thing is the appendix of glossed terms in Japanese, Chinese and Korean. I for one would have appreciated more than a vocabulary list; if the notes in the text had contained the original language versions of his text, I'd have been happier.

Tony Gaddis is the principal author of the Starting Out with series of textbooks. He has nearly two decades of experience teaching computer science courses, primarily at Haywood Community College. Good book, well written, pain to get resources

So far enjoying the book, it is well written and definitely made to assist people who either no experience or limited experience coding. The writing style is very easy to comprehend and does not ever feel overwhelming. Author never leaves the feeling that he is not a subject matter expert, I will definitely pursue other books from this Author. I will update once I complete it.

Only giving 4 stars due to the difficulty I am having getting the example source code and companion files. It seems this was made for educational purposed and goes through a site dedicated as such. To get the files you need an access code, which did not come with my kindle version; or if there is another way its not clear. The in-book instructions do not match the site functionality.

A thorough teaching tool allowing for creative thinking.

I used this book, 1st edition to teach a class in C++ to precocious 14 year old boys. I started with 10 kids and only two survived. They are now studying with my associates for the AP computer sciences class and test, one of them is entering national coding competitions.

This book brings up some challenging problems from the second chapter on and my good students answered the challenge with K&R style and confidence. This book is about Video Game programming on the outside, on the inside, it's all down to the business of programming in a creative and visual environment.

This is a great book for starting kids out in the C++ world.

I perused this book and it is good for those who want instant games but I created my own video game and it takes more work than what is given in this book. These are games which are what I call makeshift. But for those young people who are starting out it is good to see what goes into creating the basics.

mom with spunky baby meets boy with attitude ...

Kara is a single mother to Nadia – a sweet and feisty 18 month old toddler who keeps her mom on her toes. After a series of largely unfortunate events brings handsome PD (you’ll learn what it means when you read the book) paramedic Reid into Kara’s life, Kara doubts her ability to be a good mother, knows Reid strongly disapproves of her, and in general wonders about the course of her life. Kara is frantically busy at work, but earns a good living, allowing her and Nadia to live comfortably. She is also ever mindful of Nadia’s father, Steve, who dumped Kara after learning she was pregnant and probably still doesn’t even know he has a daughter.

Reid has some unfortunate and painful history of his own, causing him to put up a wall between himself and anyone with any ability to get close – and that goes doubly so for anyone with a sweet little girl.

Throughout the book, the reader feels the ups and downs of Kara and Reid’s lives as individuals and when together, especially when Nadia's father re-enters the picture. Even though I did not agree with some of the child raising attitudes expressed by characters in the book, overall I did not feel that it significantly detracted from the basic story, which I loved. I had not read the prior book in the series by the same author that was about Kara’s sister, but I do intend to. This is a stand-alone book that I easily understood and related to, although I would guess it would feel richer and be even more engaging had I been familiar with the characters and their earlier stories. In summary, I do recommend this book as an engaging, entertaining, and reasonably quick and easy read, although there are a few inconsistencies in the storyline and wording. As I have an ARC, it is not clear to me whether these will be corrected before the final version is released. Even with the few problems, I would still recommend as it is a story that I would not have wanted to miss.

I loved this story

I had so much fun with this book. I smiled, I laughed and just really enjoyed reading "His Touch" the first in the Summer in New York Series. Patty Blout just made this such an easy and lovely read that I am looking forward to His Kiss and His Love and really hope that the authors that wrote them make me fall in love with their characters too.

I love reading quick, summer reads especially when the the leading man happens to be a hot paramedic with FDNY. **swoon** Mix that with his scruffy attitude and precious little girl and you have me hooked. And, believe me, Reid was one hot male. He may have had some hardships and wore them on his sleeve but, he turned out to be just was the doctor ordered for Kara.

Kara was a strong-willed, loving women. Even though she had a hard past, she stood up on her own two feet and made a life for her and her daughter. She may have had some "woe-is-me" times but they were well deserved. Enter Reid and her life becomes totally complicated. Then bring in the ex with some horrifying news and Reid becomes her rock.

Together, they save each other. Kara makes Reid take a good look at his life and face the past and his grief. Reid lets Kara know that she doesn't have to go through life alone.

I loved this story. Patty Blount made you feel for both of the main characters in the book and she surrounded them with loving, fun friends that would do anything for the other, especially in times of need. She moved the story along and didn't drag out anything that would have had you wondering when she was going to get to the point. Reid was handsome, strong and vulnerable. Kara was loving, caring and fragile. Put them together and you had an HEA that was touching and beautiful.

An enjoyable romantic read...

If you are looking for a short but sweet, well-written, heart touching romantic tale, you might want to consider His Touch (Book 1 of Summer in New York series) by Patty Blount. Handsome NYFD paramedic, Reid Bennett, is used to rushing in and saving lives. However, it is his heart that ultimately gets rescued by single mom, Kara Larsen, and her toddler, Nadia. Reid has never gotten over the tragic death of his little girl, Erin, when he keeps running into Kara. Nadia reminds him so much of his loss, in his anguish, he is always seems to be lashing out at Kara. With a backdrop of memories of loved ones lost on 9/11, a great cast of believable secondary characters, this emotion packed story unfolds with angst-filled twists and turns. If my research is correct, “The Christmas in New York” series is based on the love stories of Nadia’s friends and sister. This reviewer would definitely like to read all the books in both series. Please note each book appears to have a different author.

Pretty good

This is no 'Gone with the Wind', but it's not bad. The author stayed pretty true to Scarlett's character. I enjoyed reading it. Rhett Butler's character was a little different, but it was still good. There was a great deal of time spent in Ireland during the book. Some parts lagged a little, but soon my attention was recaptured. I did like the end. I never saw the mini series on TV.

Great book. If you loved Gone with the Wind then this book allows you to finally get the ending of Scarlett and Rhett. It was written very well and a wonderful finish to one of my favorite movies.
